Unsigned Oil on canvas Canvas, ht. 30 1/4, wd. 25 1/4 in. Footnotes: Provenance A painted canvas inscription affixed to reverse identifies sitter as Jonathan Bates, 'most probably my greatgrandfather Maj. J.B. born 1757 / Chas. J. Bates 1910'. Note Jonathan Bates served as Lieutenant in Col. James Varnum's Rhode Island Regiment, 3 May-December 1775, and Major in the Rhode Island Militia, 1779-80.
