Description

Lot of American World War Era Helmets and 48-star flag

1.) A-11 leather flying helmet without receivers fitted and with NOTICE tag attached to the fasteners for the oxygen mask. The outer shell and inner liner both show ARMY AIR FORCES stamps , with the tag on the liner reading TYPE A-11/SPEC. NO. 3189/SIZE SMALL/P.O.NO.(33-038)44-6548-AF/BRADLEY-GOODRICH INC./PROPERTY OF AF. U.S. ARMY. No receivers have been fitted.

2.) AN-H-15 pattern cloth flight helmet. textile helmet with leather lined brow and ear cups. The outer and inner shell have been marked with a black in ARMY AIR FORCES stamp, and the liner retains its tag reading SPEC. AN-H-15/LARGE/ORDER NO. 44-6446-AF/ST. NO. 8300-401510/BATES SHOE CO./ARMY AIR FORCES.

3.) U.S. M1 pattern helmet with swivel bails and mounting a fiber helmet liner with olive drab painted outer shell featuring a grommet over the brow. The helmet's stainless steel split rim is joined at the front and spot welded on the bottom. A heat number of 882C has been struck into the helmet behind the visor. The liner crown features the manufacturer marking of the Westinghouse Electric Company. The liner is missing the chin strap and the neck support. Liner has been signed Fisher, but no further identifiers are present.

4.) U.S. M1917 pattern helmet with leather chinstrap and liner. The chin strap has broken off the fastening bolt on one side, and the liner leaving it hanging on one side. The helmet has a textured painted shell.

5.) 48-Star American flag with a repaired upper grommet and no maker mark or stamp visible. The flag is composed of woven cotton fabric, and made of stitched together layers of cloth with the stars sewn on separately.

Condition
1.) Very Fine. Leather remains supple with some loose threads, fraying at the edges of fasteners on the back of the helmet, and hardening of the rubber ear cups.2.) Very Fine. Leather supple with hardened rubber ear cups. Some creases to the chin strap.3.) Very Good. Paint is flaking off of the split rim, as is typical for aluminum rim helmets. The helmet shows some additional discolorations along the interior brow, some scuffs, and mars. The Helmet has some further scratches, mars, and scuffs.4.) Fair to Good. The chinstrap has abrasions, cracking, and some wastage with one end broken off of the central fastening bolt. The rim, and the outer surface show scattered patina and oxidation, with some of the sand paint flaking off.5.) Good. Item shows some black stitching along the top 1.25" of the header indicating the item has been repaired. Some of the material has been bunched up to stitch together. The grommet at the top of the header is likewise refastened with black stitches.
