Description
1777 True Born Englishman Daniel DEFOE English Xenophobia King William III
“It is never too late to be wise.”
– Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe was an English author who gained enduring fame for his novel, Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularize the genre in Britain. In some texts he is even referred to as one of the founders, if not the founder, of the English novel.
While Robinson Crusoe is his best and most iconic work, he wrote numerous other works including an interesting poem defending King William III of England. “The True Born Englishman” satirizes the kings xenophobic attackers, those who were from mainland Europe causing disorder for the crown. Defoe wanted to convey to readers that Englands current social climate was established by emigrants including Normans, Saxons, and ancient Britons.
