Description

Picton, Ontario. Circa 1870. Stoneware. A two-gallon stoneware jug with blue floral decoration from Eastern Ontario. Stoneware of this period with written text is rare. Scripted in blue oxide, "Picton" above a elaborately decorated "2". 14" x 10" x 10".

Condition

Tight airlines extend from the base edge, upward and underneath 1" both ways. One 3/4" chip beneath the "P" in "Picton". One 3/4" chunk of earthenware is attached to the reverse salt glaze, probably when fired. A tight 1" spider hairline on the edge of the lip. Another 1.5" hairline extends from the lip downward.
