Warrior on horseback. Qing Dynasty, late 19th-early 20th century.
Carved in amber.
Provenance: Spanish Ambassador to China and the Philippines in the second half of the 19th century, great-grandfather of the present owner.
It shows signs of use.
Wooden stand.
Measurements: 22 x 7 x 4 cm. figure; 3 x 19 x 8 cm. pedestal.
Carved amber sculpture, representing a warrior mounted on a horse holding a lance in one hand, carrying a quiver of arrows on his back and also holding a sheathed sword attached to the saddle guards. Every detail has been chiselled with descriptive zeal. Amber was especially used by Chinese craftsmen for such small figures, as the stone is believed to carry favourable energies.
