American Modernist Handwrought Sterling Silver Footed Bowl, Alfredo Sciarrotta (b. Italy, 1907, d. Newport, RI, 1985), act. Newport from c. 1948, oval footed form with ball and loop handles, h. 3 in., w. 9 in., wt. 9.7 troy ozs. Note: Sciarrotta studied mechanical engineering in Naples and worked in munitions prior to World War II. He came to the U.S. in 1943 working with the OSS on projects utilizing his underseas weapons expertise. He later pursued his artistic interests, creating handmade silver objects which were sold by the most exclusive American retailers, including Georg Jensen, Cartier, Black, Starr & Frost, Bailey, Banks & Biddle, Shreve, Crump & Low and Gump's.
