Description
IMPERIAL RUSSIAN ENAMEL "CUP OF SORROWS" BEAKER / TUMBLER, with ciphers of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra under a crown and an Imperial Eagle to the opposite side. 1896. 4 1/8" H, 3 3/4" D.
Catalogue Note: These beakers were included with the gifts handed out at the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896, part of a longstanding tradition of Imperial Russian coronations. In anticipation of the gifts, a large crowd of onlookers had gathered at Khodynka Field, a military drill ground used for coronations. According to historical accounts, rumors spread through the crowd regarding the gifts, and a desperate rush ensued, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,300 people. This became known as the Khodynka Tragedy, and the beakers the "Cup of Sorrows," and was seen as an ill omen of things to come for the Tsar's reign.
