WALTER THRIFT (NORTH CAROLINA / VIRGINIA, 1922-1969) ABSTRACT COLLAGE, mixed media on board, signed "Walter Thrift" lower right, exhibition label to verso. Housed in its original wood frame to the edges. 1961. 38" x 48 1/2" OA.
Exhibited: The Winston-Salem Gallery of Fine Arts, 12th Semi-Annual Jury, 1961.
Catalogue Note: Walter Thrift was born in High Point, NC but spent most of his life in Virginia. He studied creative writing and journalism at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia. He was a self-taught artist and did not turn to painting full-time until 1958. Thrift's paintings are included in many public collections, including the Mint Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Chrysler Museum, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art. He was featured in numerous prominent juried exhibitions, including those at the Chrysler Museum, the Mint Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, the Birmingham Museum, and the Atlanta Museum of Art.
