Description
FRENCH PORCELAIN HAND-PAINTED ARTICLES, LOT OF TWO, comprising one large covered dish of oval egg-shape raised on four rounded leafy feet, having off-center leafy handles, gilt decoration and highlights to molded features as well as florals over a cobalt ground, and a large ovoid floral-decorated jardiniere, fitting perfectly on a gilt claw-footed base. Each with various Limoges, France marks to underside, dish and cover with additional gilt mark "MADE SPECIALLY FOR / JAMES B. BRADY / N.Y. CITY / U.S.A." Late 19th/early 20th century. 10" HOA, dish 12 1/2" LOA, jardiniere 7 1/2" D rim.
Catalogue Note: Dish was made for use by Gilded Age NYC finance and railroad tycoon James Buchanan Brady, aka "Diamond Jim" Brady. Brady was famous/infamous in his time, known for his highly extravagant lifestyle and well-documented gluttonous eating habits. It is said that his stomach was six times the size of the average person's.

Condition
Jardiniere and base in excellent condition with moderate wear to gilding on base, and 1 1/2" firing line to inner rim of pot, as made; dish having two feet repaired and discoloration associated with that repair.
