Description
Chinese Carving with Mirror, probably late 19th-early 20th century in date, is intricately carved to showcase the mirror enclosed in the center part of the structure. An architectural element once adorning an affluent setting, the wood carvings depict scenes of scholars enjoying entertainers. Entertainers on a bridge form the central panel; the mirror, visible behind the open work design suggests the reflective surface of the lake. This central panel folds down so users can use the mirror. Scholars and museums parade around the circular rim. Two scenes of entertainers are carved into either of the "legs" at the bottom of the structure. The artisans ingeniously integrated the mirror into the theme of the architectural holder. The wooden carving is accented with gold and red pigment.
