Description
Allegorical Figures of Levitating Women as the Four Seasons, oil on canvas, each signed lower left and dated 1867. The women are in color themed Classical robes, representing seasonal weather, the accompanying putti having associated articles for music, hunting, and the art of agriculture. The last, representing winter, depicts the mother bundling her small child against the cold, a dead sparrow below her feet. In narrow gold molded frames, OS: 75" x 26", SS: 73 1/2" x 24 1/2". Multiple punctures and tears, poorly repaired. Heavy craquelure to Spring. Need restoration and restretching.Galland was a famous Belle Epoch theatrical scenic artist, working for the Paris Opera; he also designed and painted decorative murals for private and public spaces.
