18th c. Country Chippendale Cherry Desk, with original brass pine tree hardware, having an exposed dovetailed top, molded edge fall front with breadboard ends, interior fitted with ten pigeon holes and seven drawers (plus a secret drawer), case with four graduated drawers with cockbeaded edge molding, set on a shaped bracket base, 43" high, 38" x 20". Old repairs, shrinkage cracks. Business magnate and six-term Portland mayor James Phinney Baxter (1831-1921) was the father of Maine Governor Percival P. Baxter (1876-1969) who was in office from 1921-1925. From the estate of Percival P. Baxter. Descended through the family.
