Pair of Colima style ceramic sculptures, depicting dogs, marked
The Colima were a pre-Columbian culture in Northwestern Mexico that favored a naturalistic ceramic style. While several different themes and figures were are depicted in traditional Colima ceramics, the dog is one of the most common figures. Several ceramic dog sculptures have been found in Colima tombs, as it was believed that dogs assist the dead through their passage to the underworld.
