Description
Spanish school of the second third of the 19th century.
"Lion".
Chiselled and mercury gilded bronze. Base in smooth and burnished gilded bronze.
Measurements: 17 x 20 x 10 cm.
Like the two majestic lions that symbolically protect the entrance to the Cortes of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, this lion is a symbol of the national sovereignty and politics of Spain. In a marching stance, the majestic animal holds in its right foot a book that simulates the Constitution of 1837. It is a work of great naturalism and detail, whose body surface has been finely chiselled, reproducing its anatomy in detail. This piece may have been a gift for politicians who took part in the drafting of the Constitution.
