Charles Bathurst’s “A Serious Exhortation to the People of England” is a short 17th-century pamphlet written to defend himself and fellow Quakers against the Church and the people of England, pleading for peace. Note this passage from the tract:
“Well friends…of this you may be sure that that we do not purpose or intend any harm unto you, but really desire that it may be well every way with you… For you very well know how we have behaved ourselves amongst you and towards you for many years, and you cannot justly charge us with any alteration as to our peaceable life. (p.19)
