Description
Elva Nampeyo (Native American, Hopi-Tewa, 1926 to 1985) Pottery Canteen, ca. 20th century CE. A miniature hand-made and painted pottery canteen with a double bird motif on the front, and a leather suspension cord for displaying. While made for sale, this was crafted using traditional outdoor firing techniques and is of the upmost quality. Elva Nampeyo is the granddaughter of Nampeyo (Hopi-Tewa, 1856 to 1942) who is accredited with the revival of Pueblo pottery in the early 20th century. Many subsequent family members, including Elva's children, have also become respected potters - at least four generations of Nampeyos, and they often sign their work with the corn clan symbol that as seen on the verso of this piece. Condition
Minor fading / nicks to painted pigments. Verso signature and corn emblem are faded but legible. Intact and excellent.
