Description
Antique Spanish Colonial Polychrome Santo Figure on Horseback. Size 21 inches high. Hand-carved and hand-painted wood and gesso sculpture mounted on the original rectangular wood base. The horse has real horse hair embellishments. Strands of antique Guatemalan “reales” were added to the figure long after it was originally created as a form of veneration to the saint, who may represent “Saint James the Moor Slayer”. The apostle James the Great, or “Santiago Matamoros” was a legendary, miraculous figure who appeared at the mythical “Battle of Clavijo”. According to the legend, he led the Christian knights into battle against the Moors in the 9th century, allowing them to conquer the Moors and expel them from Spain. A very rare Santo that stands 21” high. Traces of pigment can be found throughout the sculpture. Provenance: From a private NYC collection.
