A well preserved late 18th-C flintlock musket, likely a Massachusetts gunsmith contract piece. The .70 cal 38" BBL has a single star over a P proof inspection stamp and three separate vise clamp marks at top of the barrel above the lock. Remains of a checkered wrist are visible. A stamped "B&J / COOPER" made flat lock plate, four ramrod thimbles, a third model brown bess type trigger guard, and a slight bulbus swelled stock at the entry thimble. Likely a private contract for a militia rank officer. The 5" x 7/8" lock is tight and action releases at both half and full cock. The hammer is loose on the pawl at the screw. The original frizzen spring and screw were robbed and a temporary incorrect spring was added, however a functional replacement screw remains. Lock is in the original flint configuration without conversion. Overall length of musket without the bayonet is 53". Bayonet matches the musket and has a single "D" stamped above the lug slot. Blade measures 14-1/4" x 1-1/16" and overall length of bayonet including socket is 18" Original ram rod present. Wood loss along the barrel channel on both sides of the stock.
