Description
A Brown Bess style rifle composed of European and American parts, 3rd quarter 18th century: round barrel secured to stock with pins and later wires, with no apparent marks, 43 in. L.; flint ignition, the plate with Crown and V proof mark; beech full stock with brass butt plate, trigger guard, thumb rest, and ramrod guides; iron ramrod; 59 5/8 in. L. overall. Accompanied by a bayonet of the period, stamped "70" on the ricasso and engraved "82" on the socket, 16 3/4 in. L. From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from Guthman Americana, 1988, with his adhesive labels. Deaccessioned from the Essex Institute, Salem MA, circa 1979.
Condition
Fore end of the stock partially damaged, with some losses. Barrel corroded near the muzzle
