Item Details
Description
George Elbert Burr (1859-1939)

Mt. Byers, Colorado

Circa 1919

The fine and rare etching with aquatint technique is signed by George Elbert Burr in pencil lower left below the image and inscribed del et imp lower right.

George Elbert Burr etchings with aquatint in colors are rare and not often seen in the market. Rarer still are examples retaining the subtle color of this print with its rosy hues above the peak and dark well-saturated earth tones in the foreground.

The inscription del et imp lower right stands for delineavit et imprimit, a Latin phrase commonly found on prints, etchings, and engravings where the artist both drew and etched a printed image. The phrase translates to 'drawn and printed', identifying the artist as both draftsman and printer. For example, Rembrandt etchings with the inscription 'Rembrandt del et imp,' indicate prints that Rembrandt both drew and printed rather than having a printer engrave the plate.

Image measures 10 x 7, sheet is 12.5 x 10, and frame is 17.5 x 15 inches.

Provenance: Descended through a Kansas family.

Condition
Very good condition, appears to be the full untrimmed sheet with wide margins, not laid down, no damage, puncture or repair. The original acid mounts have toned the outer margins of the sheet, there is a tiny speck of foxing in the sky area upper left, cellophane tape along the back side of the upper edge. The colors and impression are strong.
