Brig. General Williams Hays Signed Card
A card signed by Union Army general William Hays, measuring 2.25" x 3.5", n.p., undated. Boldly signed at middle as "William Hays/ Brig. Gen. Vols". Exhibits minor creasing to corners with general toning and surface markings throughout. Else, a near fine example.
William Hays (1819-1875) was a career officer in the United States Army, serving as a Union Army general during the American Civil War. His military career would span throughout the Mexican-American War and into the Civil War, where he was captured and taken prisoner in 1863 but was released in an exchange two weeks later. Hays was first appointed brigadier general of volunteers in November 1862 and was assigned command of an infantry brigade in Major General William H. French's division in the II Corps.Â
