Description
Pierre G.T. Beauregard Cut Signature w/ Bonus Pair of Letters from War Dept.
Cut signature, 1p, measuring 2.5" x 4", dated April 8, 1864, Charleston, SC. A clipped page boldly signed by Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard as "G.T. Beauregard/ Genl. C.S.A.". Accompanied by two partial-printed letters from the War Department's Ordnance Office, dated August 6 and September 12, 1864 respectively, requesting the return of property borrowed by Company C of the New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Light soiling, with evidence of prior mounting residue on clip; creasing present on lower right of letters, general toning to rest. Else, very good- an interesting grouping!
After graduating from West Point in 1838, Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard (1818-1893) started his military career by serving as an engineer officer in the Mexican-American War. Following a brief appointment as superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy in 1861, he resigned from the United States Army and became the first brigadier general in the Confederate States Army after Louisiana's secession. Beauregard in turn would lead the attack on Fort Sumner on April 12, 1861 which started the Civil War. Despite being a loyal member of the Confederate army, he was known to have a poor relationship with CSA President Jefferson Davis, as well as other senior officials. Following the war, Beauregard would become a notable advocate of black suffrage, joining the Reform Party of Louisiana in 1872.
