North Carolina Guardian Hires Out Four Slaves for His Ward in 1842
With this document, Edward B. D. Sloan reports on his efforts to hire slaves out for the year 1842 on behalf of his ward Mary Weddington, for whom he served as guardian. He rented out four slaves for a total of $70.25, though only the slave Richard was for a significant amount.

Edward Brice Dobbs Sloan (1810-1874) was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He lived his entire life in Mecklenburg, where he was a farmer. In 1837, he married Rebecca Caldwell (1816-1890), and they had at least seven children. He also served as county magistrate. In 1850, he owned one slave, and in 1860, he also owned one slave. His daughter Caroline (1851-1912) married Joseph Y. Weddington (1843-1932).
Mary J. Weddington was the daughter of Josiah W. Weddington (1790-1838), a veteran of the War of 1812, and Jane Young Weddington (1801-1839).
Elijah Baker (ca. 1770-1860) was born in North Carolina. In 1798, he married Mary Wiley (1780-1846), with whom he had at least seven children. He was a farmer in Mecklenburg County in 1830 and 1840 but by 1855 moved to Alabama, where he died.
James P. Henderson (1795-1868) was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He married Harriet P. Wallace in 1818, and they had at least seven children.
Samuel N. Weddington (1818-1857) was a physician in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and a son of Josiah W. Weddington. He married Jane Catherine Lucas (1824-1895) in 1840, and they had seven children before his death.
Calvin G. Alexander (1800-1844) was born in North Carolina, and he married Nancy Kirk in 1833. At the time of his death, he was a farmer in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
E. W. Alexander lived in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in 1840 and owned four slaves.
