Hindenburg Disaster Relic Recovered from Crash Site. CAG Encapsulated. "Oh The Humanity!"
Fabric Fragment taken from the Hindenburg disaster site. Fragment measuring .375" x .5", encapsulated by CAG to a size of 2.375'' x 3.375''. The fragment was cut from a larger piece recovered by Frederick J. 'Bull' Tobin (1892-1978), a chief boatswain who was managing the mooring lines at Lakehurst when disaster struck. Tobin became famous for ordering the fleeing ground crew back to their poses in order to assist the survivors. Accompanied by a color photocopy of the larger Hindenburg fragment (from which this was cut) and a color copy of the envelope with provenance note stating that the piece was obtained from Tobin.
The Hindenburg disaster was an airship accident that occurred on May 6, 1937, in Manchester Township, New Jersey. The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume.
