Description

Woodrow Wilson TLS Thanking Donor for Syrian Relief Funds

A typed letter signed by President Woodrow Wilson from his New Jersey summer White House. 1p, measuring 6.75" x 8.75", "Shadow Lawn", New Jersey, dated November 2, 1916. Signed "Woodrow Wilson" and addressed to Thomas D. Osborne. Wilson writes to thank Osborne for a contribution to the Syrian Relief Fund on behalf of the Union Gospel Mission of Louisville: "I shall take pleasure in forwarding the check to the Syrian Relief Committee with your request that the proceeds of it be sent to the Consul at Beirut for payment to Mr. Abraham George Shaheen…"

The Shadow Lawn estate on the campus of Monmouth University was a 52-room mansion, which in 1916 served as the summer White House for President Woodrow Wilson. In early 1915, the Turkish government began its repressive attacks against minority groups, primarily the Armenians, whose Christian religion set them apart from the Muslim Turks. Reports of the horrors brought back by missionaries to U.S. diplomatic personnel secured the creation of relief committees, resulting in the start of the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief in the fall of 1915.

The Union Gospel Mission was a philanthropic group which provided religious and social welfare services from 1886 to 1943. It was founded by Reverend Steve P. Holcombe, a gambler turned Christian and provided educational classes, free medical care, job-finding services, and lodgings for displaced or stranded persons.
