From humble beginnings in a Colorado log cabin, Robert Amick became a Western illustrator, painter, printmaker, commercial artist and teacher. His childhood in 1880s Colorado surrounded him with cowboys, Ute, and Sioux Indians, homesteaders, and prospectors. Amick earned a law degree from Yale University while still taking art classes. After practicing law for two years in Ohio, he became a full-time artist, taking private lessons and studying at the Art Students League. He did illustrations for "Harpers", "Scribner's", "The American", and other publications. In 1940, the Santa Fe Railroad commissioned Amick to paint and design Western subject matter for their advertising posters.
