Description
Fayette, Alabama. C. 1990. Handmade pigments on wood panel. Another Southern American folk painting by Jimmy Lee Sudduth of a bust-high portrait of a woman painted in shades of brown, green, white, and yellow. Her features are enhanced in stark white with a swirl of similar colours added behind her head. The unusual portrait is set against an equally stark black background. Signed, "Jim Suddth", lower right corner. Sight: 24" x 21". Frame: 26.25" x 23" x 1.75". From the Marty Osler Collection. Jimmy Lee Sudduth (1910-2007) spent most of his life in Fayette, Alabama. His paintings were rich with imagination, depicting a variety of subjects including self-portraits, animals, television personalities, landscape and architecture. His materials were no less creative as he used mud mixed with sugar water and created colours from weeds and vegetables. He once said, "You can paint a thousand dollars worth of pictures with just a cupful of sugar". He rarely used brushes or canvases, preferring to paint with his fingers using clay, mud, and soot on plywood. Unlike many folk artists, Sudduth was recognized for his talent during his lifetime. His work is featured in many collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Birmingham Museum of Art and the House of Blues.
