Item Details
Description
Monumental Antique French Tapestry Embroidery Wall Hanging, 18th Century: Silk and metallic thread embroidered on silk moire. Size: 11'3'' x 5'9'' (343 x 175 cm). In excellent condition, having been meticulously restored, stabilized, and backed. This exquisite piece has a rich provenance, having been de-acquisitioned by the Chrysler Museum in Virginia. This magnificent French tapestry embroidery wall hanging, crafted in the first half of the 18th century, is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the era, with its imposing size suggesting it was likely commissioned by the royal court. During this period, embroidery remained the primary means of adorning large-scale furnishings, though it later yielded to the popularity of silk and wallpaper wall coverings. The style of this piece exudes the essence of rococo art, characterized by its lush naturalism, particularly evident in the intricately detailed leaves and flowers. It strongly echoes the aesthetic of Aubusson rugs from the same period. Typical rococo designs incorporated elements like bird cages, doves, garlands, ribbons, partridges with chicks, musical instruments, baskets of flowers, and rose-entwined columns, all of which were prevalent in the court of Louis XVI.The most renowned textile designers of this era, such as Revel and Lasalle, were favored by Marie-Antoinette. Innovations like moiré and chiné fabrics emerged during this period, adding to the tapestry's richness. Chiné, akin to ikat, involves stamping the warp while it's on the loom, while moiré, the ground material in this wall hanging, is created by folding the fabric double and pressing it with a roller to achieve a watered effect. The handiwork behind this French tapestry is evidently a result of many skilled artisans. It features a variety of gold and silver ribbons and metal-wrapped threads applied through various stitching techniques, including couching and laid work. Some areas are skillfully crafted to appear three-dimensional, adding depth and texture. The polychrome silk embroidery is executed using long and short stitches and stem stitches, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail and artistic excellence of the period.
