Moroccan Silk Mirror Cover, Tetouan, 19th C. Silk. Size: 90'' x 11'' (229 x 28 cm). A long embroidered panel composed of two attached sections. In Moroccan tradition, mirror covers like this one were used during weddings and celebratory occasions to ward off the evil eye. They are meticulously created through freehand drawings made directly on fabric, and the handwork is executed in silk using satin stitch and double darning stitch. The color palette is rich and vibrant, set against a natural-colored silk ground. Tetouan, located in northern Morocco, has a unique cultural history that has influenced its embroidery traditions. The city was established in the 14th century, and its inhabitants have been influenced by various cultural and artistic traditions over the centuries. Notably, the embroidery style in Tetouan is distinct from other Moroccan embroidery techniques. It features long satin stitches, is often double-sided, and the drawing style bears resemblance to Uzbek suzanis.
