Nina Poleahla (Hopi, 20th century). "Poli Mana" cottonwood kachina sculpture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. Signed with title, culture, clan, and location on underside of base. A delightful cottonwood sculpture of the Poli Mana or the Butterfly Maiden kachina, elaborately adorned in vibrant pigments, plumage, and yarn. In Hopi mythology, the Butterfly Maiden kachina dances from flower to flower, pollinating the fields and flowers and bringing life-giving rain to the Arizona desert every spring. The Poli Mana is the dancing companion to the Poli kachina and personated by a man. Size (with feathers): 6.5" W x 13" H (16.5 cm x 33 cm)

Signed with title, culture, clan, and location on underside of base. Turquoise wood on head has been professionally reattached. Some fraying to feathers, but otherwise mostly intact and excellent.
