*Artist Harold Newton was a preeminent American landscape artist, painting the natural riches of coastal Florida in oils, but ascending the medium with lush color tonality and meticulous structure. He was the most prestigious of the Highwaymen painters, so known because as persons of color they were forced to sell their art from their cars, rather than in local galleries.
Artist Harold Newton had an exquisite sense of color, and his artwork is a blended rich, warm, island-inspired palette with a muted, almost gossamer over-composition. Harold Newton's paintings are reminiscent of traditional Impressionism, yet with structural contrast in which features are delineated distinctly.
Harold Newton was a founding member of the Florida Highwaymen, a group of twenty-six African American artists, who painted vivid Florida seascapes and sunsets out of their garages and cars in the 1950s and 60s. Earning the name the Florida Highwaymen, they spent their weekends driving to hotels and tourist venues to sell their works, since art galleries were not open to black artists in the segregated South.
