Joseph W. Lewis Boston MDCCCXXII" and on verso "James Brown Herreshoff From his Aunt Caroline L. Lewis". Features gadroon banding at base. Marked underneath "JB Jones". Weight: 5.1 ozt. We were able to identify the names and some history behind this cup and here is a little information on each:James Brown F. Herreshoff (1834?1930) was an American inventor and chemist with a number of American patents related to chemicals and filed in the 1900s and 1910s: a coil-stream boiler, keels used on racing yachts, sliding seats on rowboats, mercurial anti-fouling paint, an apparatus for measuring heat of gases. James Brown Herreshoff, oldest child of Charles Frederick and Julia Ann (Lewis) Herreshoff, was born March 18, 1834, at Point Pleasant Farm, Bristol, R. I. He was educated at the schools of Bristol and Providence, and later at Brown University, where he took a special scientific course and devoted most of his attention to chemistry. He was graduated from Brown University in 1855, and shortly thereafter secured a position with the Rumford Chemical Company at Rumford, R. I., and remained with that concern as manufacturing chemist for ten years. Mr. Herreshoff retired from business in 1870, and devoted his attention to perfecting a number of devices which he had in his mind and desired to experiment upon. In this manner he introduced several great improvements in the mechanical equipment of that time, but undoubtedly his greatest achievement was his invention of the 'coil boiler', which became useful and famous as one of the first steps toward a new form of marine boiler now in frequent use in torpedo boats and where a maximum of power and minimum of weight are required.Joseph Warren Lewis, son of Captain Winslow and Mary (Knowles) Lewis, was born September 20, 1784. He married, May 1, 1808, Ann Lane, a daughter of Levi and Elizabeth (Gyles) Lane, of Boston, where she was born June 21, 1786. Mr. Lewis died in Boston, May 11, 1844, and Mrs. Lewis on July 13, 1856, at Bristol, R. I. It was their daughter, Julia Ann Lewis, who became the wife of Charles Frederick Herreshoff.Learn more about James Brown Herreshoff and his family at the links below:
