Richard Blome (British, 1635-1705). Hand-colored copper plate engravings, London: ca. 1686 to 1710. A trio of original 18th century hand-colored copper plate engravings from Richard Blome's encyclopedic work titled, "The Gentleman's Recreations: in Three Parts". These sporting prints were created to educate British country gentlemen at the start of the Age of Enlightenment. All three present elaborate, hand-colored hunting scenes: (1) "Partridge Hawking" (2) "Hunting ye Wild Bore" and (3) "Stagg Hunting" and all three feature engraved dedications from Blome to aristocratic patrons who subscribed to his publication in the lower margins. A handsome selection of 18th century hunting prints mounted behind glass in wooden frames. Size (sight view of Boar Hunting scene): 13.75" L x 8.625" W (34.9 cm x 21.9 cm) Size (frame): 18.625" L x 12.625" W (47.3 cm x 32.1 cm)
Richard Blome was a British engraver, publisher and cartographer in the 17th century. His works include: "A Geographical Description of the Four Parts of the World" (1670); "Britannia, or a Geographical Description of the Kingdom of England, Scotland and Ireland" (1673); "Speed's Maps Epitomiz'd" (first edition 1685 and reissued several times); "The Gentleman's Recreations: in Three Parts" (1686); and "Isles and Territories of America" for Anthony Earl of Shaftesbury (1687 and French edition in 1688).
Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004

Condition
These engravings are mounted behind glass in wooden frames and have not been examined outside the frames. All present with expected toning and soft creases. Frames present with surface scuffs commensurate with age but are intact and fit with suspension wires.
