Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $700**

East Asia, Japan, Tokugawa / Edo period, ca. 19th century CE. A fine wood mask with a papier-mache interior of the Shikami or "grimace" type from the Noh musical. The expressive vizard has muscular eyebrows and cheeks, while his down-turned mouth shows upper and lower rows of teeth. Although the face can look frightening and full of rage, it also looks sorrowful and grieving- capturing both wrath and pain is difficult, but simply tilting the head and changing the perspective of the audience can convey this change in expression. Size: 7.6" W x 10.8" H (19.3 cm x 27.4 cm); 15.1" H (38.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: from the private collection of John A. Buxton of "Antiques Roadshow," Dallas, Texas, USA, acquired before 2003; Mr. Buxton has been an appraiser with "Antiques Roadshow" since its first season in 1997

Condition
Some expected small nicks and abrasions as well as a minor, stable, hairline surface fissure on chin. Otherwise, intact and excellent with nice pigments and rich patina. Label with Japanese script on interior, likely identifying the character that the mask portrays.
