br>This map depicts the remote Juan Fernandez Archipelago in Chile, specifically focusing on Robinson Crusoe Island. It features a detailed plan of the island, including a compass, and mentions the distance to Chile. The current population of the archipelago is approximately 900. The map is part of the renowned firsthand account by Baron George Anson titled "A Voyage Round the World", published in London in 1756. Anson, an English pirate, embarked on a daring mission to attack Spanish territories in western South America and plunder their treasure galleons. This perilous undertaking posed significant risks, including the potential conviction and execution for piracy by the Spanish. Anson's crew and fleet suffered substantial losses, with over two-thirds of his crew and three of his eight ships lost during the expedition. Despite the challenges, Anson's squadron set sail in 1740 and returned in 1744, completing a circumnavigation of the globe aboard his flagship, the Centurion, with only 125 men remaining. Anson's unwavering determination eventually led to his successful capture of the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon 'Nuestra Seniora de Cobadonga' in 1743 off Cape Espiritu Santo in the Philippines. This notable achievement earned him a promotion to the position of Lord in the British crown, solidifying his status as one of the top English commanders during the Seven Years' War. The map is a copperplate engraving in excellent condition, measuring 20 3/4" x 20". Its authenticity is guaranteed.
