Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Oil on beaverboard. A folk art style naive painting of a bright yellow sunrise streaked with orange against a ribbon of dark green hills and a village painted in bright red. Leafless brown trees frame the scene where two deer rendered in pudding yellow with dark brown antlers stand on a bright white path. Just as the sun would rise every morning, Maud raised her brushes to start painting. This optimistic and charming work encompasses the Nova Scotia countryside. These familiar surroundings were the calming backdrop of her hard life. "Two Deer" is a serial image found only in the 1960s. This painting is signed "M. Lewis" which is the rarest of the Maud Lewis signatures. Signed, M. Lewis", lower right. Labeled, "A Christmas gift to Joe...", on verso. Beaverboard: 12 x 13.5". From the Ray Mickle Estate.
