Description
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely cotton and canvas thangka featuring a painted scene of the Shakyamuni Buddha seated atop a lotus throne. His body is surrounded by a coronal halo and nimbus behind his head. The verso of the canvas has the Tibetan inscription of the mantra Om Ah Hum (Hung), and the ends of the cotton are sewn to wood rods for hanging and easily rolling up for storage. Thangka serve as teaching tools, but also as focal points for devotion when brought out during a ritual. They also can be used for meditation, allowing the viewer to focus on the scene at hand and put away earthly distractions. Size of thangka: 26.5" L x 23" W (67.3 cm x 58.4 cm); canvas: 16" L x 11" W (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm)
