Description
Eugene Edmond Thiery (French, 1875-1961) Oil on Board "Pont Marie". Depicts the arched bridge over the Seine. Signed lower right, good condition. In gilt frame with corner embellishments. In frame 17"x14"x1.75". Weight 3 pds. French artist Eugene Edmond Thiery studied at Notre-Dame College in Rethel before becoming a pupil of landscape painter Eugene Damas. He gave up painting to study law but eventually returned and painted the chapels and Stations of the Cross for the Saint Jean Church in Montmartre. In 1927 Thiery painted frescoes in the choir loft and two naves of the church of Nanteuil-sur-Aisne, which were later destroyed in World War II. He exhibited his work at the Salon des Artistes Francais, the Salon d'Hiver, the Salon des Independants and the Societe des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux. He won the Albert Maignan Prize in 1920 and is known for his frescoes in the town hall of Rethel.
