Description
Samuel Baumeister (ca.1720-ca.1800)-Attrib. "Portrait of a lady", fine miniature on vellum, ca.1780
This German miniature on vellum with portrait of a (presumably) court lady meets all stylistic criteria of works by well-known German 18th-century miniaturist Samuel Baumeister (for comparison, see one of his miniatures from Collection Tansey - our image nr.10).
According to the old authentic inscription on verso, this miniature was exhibited in 1905 in Troppau and in 1906 in Berlin.
Samuel Baumeister was born presumably in Augsburg and died in ca. 1800 in the same city. In 1763 he was mentioned as Hausmaler (home-based employee) of the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory. Besides making paintings on porcelain he was also known as heraldic artist, jewelry designer and, especially, a miniaturist. A miniature portrait of Friedrich the Great painted by Samuel Baumeister was housed in the Collection Buchner in Bamberg. Besides Augsburg, the artist also worked in Breslau.
