Seven Staffordshire Frog Mugs England, 19th century, one transfer-printed with portraits of Jenny Lind flanking the coat of arms of the Prince of Wales, two spotted frogs to interior walls, lg. 6 1/4; one with a depiction of the Sunderland Bridge on one side and a ship on the other, both enclosed by lustre cartouches, brown frog to interior, lg. 5 1/2; one commemorating marriage, 'James and Margaret Kincade/ Slamanan/ 1876', with blue banded border, rearing yellow and brown frog to center, lg. 6 in. Footnotes: From The Estate of William 'Bill' Hicks Bill Hicks was a prominent figure in the New York City theater scene in the 1960s and 1970s. Bill was the first Development Director of Joseph Papp's The Public Theater, and his fundraising efforts were instrumental in underwriting hits including 'Hair', 'A Chorus Line', and 'That Championship Season'. Bill was also an avid collector of British ceramics, and his frog mug collection spans the late 18th to late 19th centuries and features historical and whimsical scenes, often with witty and clever rhymes.
