Description

'PANKO' - ORIGINAL DRAWING Original drawing by E.T. Reed, for the suffragette card game 'Panko', depicting Emmeline Pankhurst standing by a policeman, with the title 'Pank, Pank, Pank!' beneath, pencil, signed with monogram 'ETR' (lower left), framed and glazed, unexamined out of frame, image 245 x 205mm., overall 355 x 310mm., [c.1909] Footnotes: 'PANK! PANK! PANK!': The illustration shows Emmeline Pankhurst standing beside a policeman not dissimilar to Police Inspector Jarvis, the policeman who was famously 'struck lightly on the cheek' by Mrs Pankhurst at the deputation to the Prime Minister on 29th June 1909 (note he is sporting a sticking plaster on his cheek). At the incident, she was refused permission to enter the House of Commons and arrested. In the final design used for the card game, the policeman was removed. The card game 'Panko', costing two shillings, was widely distributed by the Women's Social and Political Union. The manufacturer's advertisement noted the fine, true-to-life illustrations which '...form a portrait gallery of the leading figures of the movement. Not only is each picture in itself an interesting memento, but the game produces intense excitement without the slightest taint of bitterness. Are your friends interested in the cause? If so there is no better way to please them than to buy a pack of 'PANKO'' (Votes for Women, 3 December 1909). The illustrator Edward Tennyson Reed (1860-1933) is primarily known for his political caricatures for Punch magazine, his ubiquitous style clearly seen here in his designs for Panko.
