Item Details
Description
An exquisite example of pop art graffiti, a Keith Haring Pop Shop poster / folded mail order catalogue & rare mailing envelope. Offset lithograph, double sided. Hand signed by artist and dated '87 in black marker, mid center. The original owner of this piece met Keith Haring at an exhibition at the Cranbrook Museum in 1987. Haring was in attendance to speak to the students and following the presentation, he had the poster autographed by Haring. A unique provenance for collectors of Keith Haring artworks. Imagery is by photographer Tseng Kwong Chi and is titled "Keith Haring in the Pop Shop, 1983." The Pop Shop was a fun boutique where Haring's art could be accessible to everyone. For nearly twenty years, the shop continued to be a downtown attraction with floor-to-ceiling murals and affordable clothing and gift items all featuring Keith Haring's unique icons. From a private collection. Dimensions: 16"h x 22"w (unframed). There is a very small tear on left side of the poster but overall in very good vintage condition. Keith Haring (1958-1990) was an American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. His animated imagery has become a widely recognized visual language. Haring's popularity grew from his spontaneous drawings in New York City subways; chalk outlines of figures, dogs, and other stylized images on blank black advertising spaces. After gaining public recognition, he created colorful larger scale murals, many commissioned. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, many of them created voluntarily for hospitals, day care centers and schools. In 1986, he opened the Pop Shop as an extension of his work. His later work often conveyed political and societal themes; anti-crack, anti-apartheid, safe sex, homosexuality, and AIDS; through his own iconography.
