Joseph BOILLOT. Modelles Artifices de Feu, et divers instrume[n]'s de guerre avec les moye[n]s de s'en prevaloir. Chaumont: Quentin Mareschal, 1598. Quarto. Engraved title, 90 large engraved illustrations. (Title and about six other leaves shaved with some loss from the lower margin). Old vellum-covered boards (light soiling). Provenance: C. Charbonnier (bookplate). First edition, the first book to be printed in Chaumont and one of the earliest books on pyrotechnics. Boillot served in the army of Henri IV and was responsible for the supply of saltpetre, the main ingredient of gunpowder. Cockle 933; Deschamps 247; Baudrier XI, 519 .
