One of Suzor-Côté's most ambitious works, Le halage du bois depicts the traditional transport of logs by horse-drawn sledges during the Canadian winter. The artist exhibited a plaster and wood maquette of the subject in 1910 at the Ontario Society of Artists and completed an oil on canvas version in 1924 (now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada). He tackled the subject again in the early 1920s, working on the bronze bas-relief frieze intended as an overmantel. The initial cast was exhibited in 1925 at the Art Association of Montreal where it received critical acclaim.
