TITIAN RAMSAY PEALE (American 1799-1885) A PRINT, "Finches," 1858, engraving with hand-coloring, a plate from John Cassin's, "Mammalogy and Ornithology," featuring, "1. Erythrura Pealei. Hartlaub. 2. Erythrura cyaneovirens. (Peale.) 3. Volatinia jacarina. (Linnaeus.);" 19 3/4" x 13", framed 28 3/4" x 22 1/2". Note: From John Cassin's "Mammalogy and Ornithology" report of the United States Exploring Expedition under Captain Charles Wilkes. Peale youngest son of painter Charles Wilson Peale, accompanied this landmark naval expedition, which explored South America, Australia, Antartica, the Pacific islands, and America's northwest coast between 1838 and 1842. This was the first American circumnavigation of the globe. Engraved by W. H. Dougal. Pictured are the Fiji parrotfinch, red-headed parrotfinch, and the blue-black grassquit.Provenance: Collection of Brent Bell, Houston, Texas.
Condition
The sheet is toned and there are some flattened creases, scattered fox marks, and some lines of discoloration. With a top mat and framed under plexiglass.
