A DUTCH MAP OF THE GULF OF MEXICO AND THE CARIBBEAN, "Stoel des Oorlogs in America," CIRCA 1730, copper plate engraving with hand-coloring, published by Reinier and Josua Ottens in Amsterdam; 20" x 22 3/4", framed 28 3/4" x 31 3/4". Note: Reinier and Josua (Joshua) Ottens were brothers who founded a publishing partnership in 1726 which continued until Reinier's death in 1750 and thereafter with his son. The title of this map in English is "Area of War in America," and it refers to the Nine Years War (1688-97) which was a conflict between France under Louis XIV and an alliance of other European powers including The Dutch Republic, Great Britain, Spain, and The Holy Roman Empire. In the Americas, much of the fighting involved naval skirmishes which aimed to disrupt or steal the gold, silver, sugar, and other commodities that were being shipped through the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Notably, this map shows the main Spanish shipping routes out of Havana, Vera Cruz, and Cartagena which were the three wealthiest port cities in this part of the world at the time.
