Item Details
Description
Ca. 100-300 AD. A marble Cupid torso. Despite the absence of its head, the torso exudes an undeniable handsomeness that captivates the observer. Adorned with an armful of luscious fruits, the chubby naked body of the sculpture emanates a sense of innocence and youthful charm. Notably, the lower region of the torso, where the crotch is situated, is discreetly veiled by a delicate floral arrangement, acting as an intricate form of underwear. Cupid, a prominent figure in Roman mythology, represents the god of love and desire. Often depicted as a mischievous, winged child, Cupid's association with love and fertility is well-established within the Greco-Roman pantheon. This portrayal of Cupid conveys an intimate connection with the realm of nature and abundance. The armful of fruits symbolizes fertility and the bountiful gifts of nature, underscoring Cupid's association with love, desire, and the flourishing of life. This item comes mounted on a custom-made stand. Size: L:90mm / W:55mm ; 160g Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
