Item Details
Description
Late Period, ca. 664-332 BC. A glazed composition amulet depicting the goddess Tawaret standing in a confident posture, with arms held at the sides of her pregnant belly, and pendulous breasts, while standing on an integral base with a back pillar. Additionally, the amulet has been pierced for suspension, indicating that it was likely worn as a protective talisman. In ancient Egyptian religion, Tawaret was a goddess associated with fertility, childbirth, and protection. Her unique appearance, combining the characteristics of a hippopotamus, woman, and crocodile, reflected her protective and nurturing qualities, and she was often depicted holding a child or wearing a headdress of ostrich feathers. Tawaret was particularly revered by pregnant women, who sought her protection during childbirth. For a similar, see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 74.51.4486. Size: L:47mm / W:12.2mm ; 5.9g Provenance: Private London collection, pre-2000s.
