"Inquiries Concerning the Intellectual Powers, and the Investigation of Truth" by John Abercrombie, With Additions and Explanations to Adapt the Work to the Use of Schools and Academies, by Jacob Abbott, Revised Edition, published by Collins and Brothers, New York, 1870.
Hard boards, original cloth, gold lettering on spine [wear]; 4.3/4" x 7.3/4"; former owner's name [Thos. C. Miller] on the front endpaper, 284 pages, some soiling and wear, several pencil notes and markings [easy to erase]; good condition.
Abercrombie published Inquiries concerning the Intellectual Powers and the Investigation of Truth in 1830. In 1833 followed a sequel, The Philosophy of the Moral Feelings. Both works achieved wide popularity at the time of their publication. The Inquiries (1830) has been widely cited in treatises on the law of evidence, due to its discussion of probability, (the sources of) certainty, and (doubts regarding) testimony. Jacob Abbott edited "Inquiries" with additions and explanations in 1833.
John Abercrombie (1780-1844) was a Scottish physician, author, philosopher, and philanthropist. His Edinburgh practice became one of the most successful medical practices in Scotland.
Abercrombie was a founder member in 1841 of the Edinburgh Association for sending Medical Aid for Foreign Countries, which became the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society, and he gave financial support to its work.
The year after his death his Essays (1845) on Christian ethics were published.
