Description
Native American, Western United States, Plains region, likely Lakota / Dakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A steel and wood Russell Green River knife with a hand beaded leather sheath made by a western plain tribe, possibly Sioux people. The blade is a butcher style and marked by the renowned "Russell / Green River Works" above the diamond logo, and 5 pins rivet the wood handle in place. The blade-shaped sheath is densely decorated with beadwork to create eye-catching geometric motif, then lined with leather tassels and tin jingle cones. The verso that would lie against the wearer's body is plain and has a suspension cord. It is unclear if the sheath was made for this exact blade. The Green River knives are synonymous with the American frontier and often carried by European settlers. Size of sheath: 11.5" L x 3.5" W (29.2 cm x 8.9 cm); knife: 12.5" L (31.8 cm); blade only: 8" L x 1.5" W (20.3 cm x 3.8 cm)
